Kin-Kara-kawa-shi ( literally, Golden Foreign-origin Leather Paper ) are Japanese Leather Paper made from Washi early in the Meiji period to imitate Kin- kara-kawa which was golden decorative leatherworks for the walls of medieval European royal palaces. While being exported to Europe, they were also used for such western-style buildings as Rokumeikan in Japan.
Once they had disappeared, however Artist Takashi Ueda began a restoration effort, utilizing old carved round wood patterns made in those days. We exhibit the carved wood rolls, cut sheet samples from our collection, and Artist Ueda's works.
